Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary work has demonstrated that optically nonlinear donor-(-bridge)-acceptor dyes may be utilised as chemical sensors when fabricated as either self assembled or Langmuir-Blodgett monolyaers on gold coated prisms and optical fibres. The films rapidly undergo a reversible change when exposed to ammonia (coloured form) and air (transparent from) and thus by monitoring changes in the reflectivity from the glass/Au/monolayer device, the dyes may be used to quantitatively detect ammonia. Optimisation is dependent upon their being a large change in the refractive index at the excitory wavelength and this may be controlled by systematically varying the donor/acceptor combination and the -electron bridge of the dye.
