Summary on Grant Application Form
Future buildings and public facilities will feature deployable structures including intelligent facades for buildings and large retractable roofs for sports facilities such as stadiums and tennis courts. The world market for applications of deployables is enormous. Although the UK currently enjoys a widely acclaimed reputation for fine architecture design, the systematic research into the development of generic concepts of deployable structures for these types of applications has yet to take place. To sustain the competitiveness, it is important to invest in research. An in-depth understanding of the key features of deployables will be required. In this proposal we intend to study geometric and design aspects of deployable structures. The aim is to develop an automated tool based on numerical analysis to assist engineers in the design of the structural mechanisms. In particular, we shall study smart structural systems whose geometric and structural characteristics can be changed beneficially in order to meet practical requirements. The method will be used for design of retractable roofs and intelligent facades. Also it will be applicable to design of deployable structures in aerospace and in medical engineering. This research will produce new concepts and contribute to civil and mechanical engineering science in general.
