|
The aim of this project is to carry out fundamental research into the nature of decision support that may be provided for managers and other decision makers involved with large-scale systems engineering projects. Design, specification and procurement decisions for these projects are affected by a large number of technical and non-technical factors that change over time. Keeping track of these factors, the associated costs, and risks is a difficult problem that is exacerbated by the long procurement process which is normal for large projects.We will investigate how qualitative and quantitative information that is relevant to large-scale systems may be managed, processed and presented to decision-makers. We will integrate argumentation-based approaches with quantitative approaches to DSS and we will particularly focus on the issues of presenting this information to managers in an understandable way. Using a visual programming approach, we will support the process of distributed decision making where estimates of cost, risk and value may be produced by several different people.An important aspect of the work is an evaluation stream where we will derive a systematic approach, based on software systems methodology, to evaluate the usefulness of our research in an industrial context.
