Over the past 6 years, the applicants' interdisciplinary neurological/bioengineering group has been developing the novel medical imaging method of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) for the non-invasive imaging of brain function humans. If successful, it will uniquely provide a rapid, portable and inexpensive method for imaging brain function. In a painstaking series of animal experiments, we have shown that EIT can accurately image stroke, epilepsy and normal activity, with electrodes placed directly on the brain. We have developed a 16 channel novel low frequency portable EIT system, and a new 3D reconstruction algorithm, optimised for overcoming the particular technical challenge of imaging brain function through the skull, using scalp electrodes. In the past few months we have produced the first ever objectively validated EIT images of human brain function, using scalp electrodes, but the spatial resolution needs to be improved.This application is for two postdoctoral physicists and a clinician for two years each, to address current technical challenges and produce an EIT system suitable for regular medical use. They will respectively develop a 128 channel EIT system, 3D reconstruction algorithm using a realistic FEM based head model, and evaluate and optimise its application in clinical practice using multifrequency information.
