Summary on Grant Application Form
Alpha/beta titanium alloys are inherently anisotropic in their deformation response. Until recently, however, processing routes have been devised to minimise the development of texture in components. Now though it is recognised within the gas turbine industry, that texture control can be used to optimise mechanical response in specific components (compressor blades). Furthermore, the growth of non aerospace applications has also generated an interest in matching texture and microstructure to the more demanding load directions (engine conrods. At present any textural advantages are gained on an essentially 'hit and miss' basis. The present programme seeks support to remedy this situation by bringing together an interdisciplinary team of industrial and academic experts in the field of titanium alloy technology. The research activity will encompass (i) the development of an existing process modelling capability for rolling and forging operations, (ii) the full mechanical characterisation of existing uni-directional rolled plate in terms of the impact of texture and microstructure and (iii) validation of the modelling capability developed through full scale rolling trials and component testing.
