Summary on Grant Application Form
In the UK funding for medical device research and medical engineering has been provided by EPSRC, Medlink, MRC, DTI and various industrial bodies with the result that small specialist groups have emerged. These groups, some of which have been highly successful, do not in general collaborate, interact of disseminate information rapidly or in effective manner to maximise benefit. In many cases the underlying reason for this is the multidisciplinary nature of medically based research which involves inputs from biophysics, biomaterials, bioengineering, biochemists and clinicians. It is therefore the object of this NETWORK to bring together a group of interdisciplinary researchers, who have a proven track record in the field of dental and oral healthcare, to provide a framework which will promote and encourage new and emerging ideas and technologies. Furthermore, such a framework would provide a focus for excellence in research for both the benefit of UK industry and the health of the nation. The proposed Network is indeed a new collaboration and the proposed partners have all offered their full and unequivocal support in the setting up of this initiative.
