Summary on Grant Application Form
A remarkable new high-Tc superconductor which contains ferromagnetic ruthenium oxide layers in addition to superconducting copper oxide planes has recently been reported. We proposed to study the cation compositions, substitutions, and oxygen contents of this phase and discover how they affect the physical properties of the two electronic subsystems. We aim to optimise Tc and prepare low neutron-absorbing derivatives for neutron diffraction studies; resonant powder X-ray diffraction will be used to determine cation site occupancies. Other potential ferromagnetic superconductor structures will also be targeted. A PDRA is requested to perform this work. Small items of equipment, neutron and synchrotron beam time, and consumables are also needed.
