Summary on Grant Application Form
Microporous materials are an important class of industrially useful materials, with applications in catalysis, ion exchange and adsorption processes. Many of the processes involved in industry take place at elevated temperatures and it is important for us to know the effect of temperature on the structure of these solids. In this proposal we will study the structural changes that accompany three processes which occur in microporous materials; negative thermal expansion, the topotactic phase transformation of aluminomethyl phoshonates and the thermal behaviour of fluoride ions and organic templates. This will be accomplished using microcrystal x-ray diffraction experiments. Currently, there are very few experimental results available that give direct evidence for the atomic scale mechanism of these three processes. A successful completion of this project should provide the first such evidence.
