Summary on Grant Application Form
The aims of the research are to develop algorithms for multi-camera video surveillance and monitoring capable of detecting and tracking targeted objects (e.g. people, animals, vehicles) across an extended, virtual camera environment in 3D. The algorithms will operate on a network of distributed, intelligent cameras which act as a cooperative fashion to maintain reliable tracking in the face of occlusion, illumination variations, large changes in depth etc. The software will maintain a database of persistent objects based on both active (currently visible) and inactive (not currently visible) targets known to have entered the environment. One novelty of the system lies in the cooperative processing, which underlies the tracking of targets across multiple camera through inter-camera communications. A second important part of the proposal lies in the modelling and learning aspects in order to provide flexible adaption to the changing environment. Finally the robust operation of the system will be tested by real-time operation on a laboratory-based implementation of the network and using video sequences gathered from the BT surveillance network.
