The project is concerned with the computation of a small number of dangerous eigenvalues of large sparse generalised eigenvalue problems arising from finite element discretisation.The methods of choice in such applications invariably use a shift-invert strategy at some point in the solution procedure, which requires linear solvers with large sparse systems. Novel aspects in this project are (i) the application of domain decomposition techniques exploiting the specific structure in the PDEs to parallelise and precondition the nearly singular linear solves, and (ii) the use of a splitting method to enable the efficient calculation of clustered and/or complexe eigenvalues typically arising in applications and on which current codes perform poorly.A public domain code design to take as data the PDEs specified in terms of element matrices will be produced and will be provided as a package on the Web with a user guide as is currently done with the software package DOUG for the solution of elliptic PDEs. The main applications wil be provided by AEA Technology and discretised using the AEA Technology software ENTWIFE. It is proposed to test the codes on eigenvalue problems ariaing from complexe industrial processes which are beyond the reach of current eigenvalue software.
