Iterative methods provide the only feasible route to the solution of linearised systems which derive from large scale problems in computational partial differential equations especially in 3-dimensions. Except for simple cases, preconditioning is a vital component of any iterative solution strategy for such problems.Preconditioned iterative solvers for the linearised incompressible Navier-Stokes problems (the Oseen problem) will be developed, analysed and implemented in this project. We plan to base our work on the recent 'BFBT' idea of Elman which appears to be a significant advance on previously know and currently used methodology. Specifically we will combine recent work of the proposer and named prospective PDRA on Green's function preconditioning for advection-diffusion problems with BFBT, provide an analysis of BFBT to illucidate its properties for Stokes and Navier-Stokes problems as well as considering approximate solution methods for a component subproblem. The combination of these investigations should lead to a practical solution process for large-scale flow problems and this will be implemented into a heavily used industrial fluid flow simulation code.
