Summary on Grant Application Form
Program slicing simplifies a system. Program transformation alters syntax, leaving semantics unchanged. Although both slicing and transformation have proved successful, syntactic structure often inhibits the simplification power of slicing. The identification of effective transformation strategies also remains a significant problem. The aim of the GUSTT project is to combine slicing and transformation, creating a unified approach which overcomes both these problems.More specifically, GUSTT will use domain information to guide the selection of suitable slicing criteria. Each criterion-domain pair will be used to define an appropriate transformation palettte, which will be used to improve the simplification power of slicing. The combined approach will thus be more powerful than the sum of its parts.
