Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to exploit the new 3rd-generation soft X-ray syschrotron radiation source, BESSY II (and the associated shutdown of BESSY I) to develop the full potential of scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction in the quantitative determination of local adsorbate geometries on surfaces. The combined enhancement of photon flux and spectral resolution will make possible the collection of site-specific as well as element-specific local structural information through the use of environment-dependent photoelectron binding energies ('chemical shifts'). This combination will also permit studies of low adsorbate coverages including step sites on vicinal surfaces and the investigation of a wider range of substrate material including first row elements (Al and Si), second transition row metals (to Pd and Ag) and possibly third transition row (notably Pt). A series of specific model adsorbate/substrate combinations will be investigated which explore these new abilities as well as addressing problems of current interest in the physics and chemistry of surfaces. Some exploration of the potential to study magnetic order using photoelectron diffraction and exploiting the availability of circularly-polarised undulator radiation is also proposed.
