Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to study the structure of gels formed by suspensions of attractive colloidal particles. Such systems are an important constituent of many industrial processes and products. Surprisingly, given their fundamental and practical importance there has been no previous attempts at determining the structure of gels in real space. We shall use fluorescent confocal microscopy toprobe the detailed microstructure of a number of representative colloidal gel types. For simplicity, we shall study gels formed by a mixture of monodisperse hard-sphere colloids and non-adsorbing polymer. Our aim is to identify how the detailed structure of the gel phase varies with the magnitude and nature of the interparticle potential.
