Extremely low frequency virtual gap rheometry (ELF-VGR) has been developed to provide long-term rheological information on viscoelastic fluids within very short timescales. This technique exploits the ability of HF shear waves to produce creep-timescale stressing by beat interference. This provides a means of directly studying the influence o rapid changes in process conditions on the long-term rheological properties. Within grant GR/L 51966, this technique will be developed for use with soft solids (post-gel point materials). In order to validate this work, a parallel conventional characterisation of these soft solids is required. This project, based around a PhD studentship, will therefore focus on the measurement of long-term viscoelastic properties of these materials using creep equipment operating in shear mode. The materials of interest will include thermo-reversible physical gels (including confectionery products), crosslinked PDMS and UV cured polyesters. With the latter materials, curing will be arrested by chemical quenching or partial UV cure. In addition, the extrapolation techniques of time-temperature superposition and stress-time superposition will be investigated for these materials.
