Summary on Grant Application Form
Micromechanical finite element analyses have been used in composite materials as can be seen in numerous publications. One important analysis of them employs a unit cell from a hexagonal fibre-matrix idealisation. Incorrect or inefficient treatments have been found in almost every publication the applicant has examined. The approach from one publication to another shows little consistency and therefore the development is in a rather unhealthy state. The proposed project will develop the results obtained in a recent paper by the applicant on the unit cell for micromechanical finite element analysis. This will help to rectify the problems present in the past analyses and restore the consistency of the mocromechanical finite element analysis. To ensure such an analysis to be performed correctly and efficiently in future, a system of benchmark cases will be produced the absence of which is largely responsible for the present situation. Using a correct, efficient and consistent approach, results will be produced on some aspects of practical significance, e.g. the effective material properties. The project is intended to lay a firm foundation for future developments at more sophisticated levels.
