Summary on Grant Application Form
Two routes to high molecular weight, highly soluble polyolefins, based on novel metallocene chemistry developed in Leeds, are to be employed for the synthesis of new types of copolymers. These routes are (i) the Ti catalysed polymerisation of propene to elastomeric polypropene (Mw>106), and (ii) the use of metallocenes as initiates for the carbocationic polymerisation of isobutene. Several classes of copolymers will be made: (a) propene copolymers with long-chain branches; (b) copolymers with unsaturated side chains and varying comonomer incorporation, suitable for subsequent functionalisation (e.g. epoxidation, hydrosilylation, carbonylation, halogenation), to give polyolefins with a potentially wide range of applications, notably adhesive properties or dyability ; (c) copolymers for modification by grafting of dendrimer-type polysilanes, to generate beads-on-string structures. Selected polymerisations will be scaled up for an assessment of down-stream properties and processing studies. The scale-up experiments will be carried out in a quantitative manner based on kinetic modelling and simulation studies.
