The proposal brings together two major British industries and three internationally renowned University Research Groups to address critical design issues associated with components operating in regimes where creep and fatigue can interact. The interesting link is the fact that the Nuclear industry has been concerned largely with creep related damage but now appreciates there can also be a fatigue component in the operation of some structures. Rolls Royce in contract has largely focused on fatigue as a major design limiting condition but with advances in engine performance are experiencing a combined creep-fatigue influence in some components. Both industries realise that current structural methods are either too time consuming, too costly or inaccurate for this type of deformation response. The University groups, on the other hand, have developed a range of appropriate analytical, modelling and experimental techniques. However, these have not been optimised for the specific structural applications of concern to the industries. The research programme will address this limitation and use the exercise to introduce more effective design procedures.
