Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to apply Large-Eddy Simulation to the study of the effects of wake passage over high lift LP turbine blades. The research will use existing code and expertise, with development of the technique to use a periodic H mesh and to run efficiently on the national HPC97 parallel supercomputer. The major part of the project will be taken up with production simulations and their interpretation. The work will enable us to elucidate the dynamical mechanisms of wake passage through a series of simulations on medium resolution meshes, investigating the effects on transition and the turbulent boundary layer on both sides of the blade, for at least two Reynolds numbers and scales of wake turbulence. A single simulation on a very high resolution mesh will be performed for typical LP turbine conditions. The work will be reported at international level and through detailed internal reports transmitted to our industrial partners, Rolls Royce plc, and academic collaborators at regular meetings. The work will proceed on the basis of close monitoring by an collaboration with Rolls Royce.
