Ph3C. radical and Ph3N + radical cation both tend to dimerise in solution but substitution of the benzene ring or extension of the conjugation yields triarylamminium (Ar3N.+) salts which are stable at room temperature. We have used these stable radical cations as S=1/2 spin-bearing building blocks in our high-spin polymers. In these the total moment is ca 7-% of the theoretical maximum. This is probably because the exchange coupling, is weakened by the highly extended nature of the conjugated systemand by twisting between the aromatic rings. One of the main aims of this project is to design in changes which increase the planarity of these systems and increase the strength of the exchange interactions and to check the success of these design changes by synthesising the characterising model monomers. The other main aim is to exploit the fruitful route to molecular magnets in which ferrimagnetic chains are created which contain alternating organic (polydentate) radical ligands and transition metal centres using ligands modelled on these stable (Ar3N.+) salts as the organic component.
