An ongoing project run by Coal Research Establishment will investigate the effects of vibration on bulk solids at the pilot scale in collaboration with University of Teesside and by a systematic investigation of full-scale plant. This proposal seeks to model such systems by the Discrete Element Method in order to seek to explain observed phenomena at the macro scale by particulate interactions at a fundamental level. Issues of importance include: the need to explain compaction/dilation and friction observations in terms of mechanisms at the particulate level; relations between internal: strains and overall strains; the role of cohesion and how it may be modelled; the effects of vibration in large structures filled with particulate materials; interactions between bulk materials and retaining walls; and optimisation and design of industrial systems.The project will interact strongly with the CRE work and the ongoing project will contribute in both cash and kind to the proposed project. British Steel will contribute 2,500 for upgrading of computer facilities at Nottingham. This will also be a very rigorous test of the hopper DEM simulation previously developed by the Principal Investigator.
