Our proposed area of investigation lies at the intersection of two spheres of computer science research that are becoming increasingly important both theoretically, through their relevance to knowledge representation languages and practically, through their application to numerous real problems. Spatial Representation and Reasoning is necessary for describing any concrete situations or process, and is central to applications such as geographical information systems, robotics, and virtual world simulation. Vagueness, uncertainty, and granularity are features of information, which permeate almost every domain of knowledge representation, and become especially significant when dealing with real information gathered and communicated by humans.We will give a semantic analysis of geographical feature descriptions to provide a basis for computational processing of aspects of the vagueness, uncertainty and granularity inherent in these descriptions. We will also specify protocols for manipulating information affected by these phenomena within spatial databases. Further, we will develop a theory of granularity and precision applicable to multi-resolution map data. The applicability of the work to real-world problems will be ensured through collaboration with Ordnance Survey and through Laser-Scan, who will provide suitable data and expertise.
