This proposal aims to extend previous work by the principal investigator to the preparation of oligoesters. The methodology involves successive chain doubling steps, in which one end of the precursor is selectively deprotected in each of two batches, which are then coupled. The starting material will be the monoester of terephthalic acid and either ethylene or butylene glycol, in the ratio 1:1. The carboxylic acid and hydroxyl terminal will be protected with groups which can be removed selectively in each other's presence. For example, protection of the acid as the benzylester and the alcohol as the tetrahydropyranyl (THP) ether would allow deprotection of the former by catalytic hydrogenlysis and of the latter with mild aqueous acid. Coupling would occur under standard esterification conditions.To overcome anticipated solubility problems with the higher oligomers, terephthalic acid modified with a trialkylsilane group will be as a building block. This group is stable under the coupling and deprotection conditions mentioned above, and would facilitate purification of materials by standard chromatographic techniques. It can be removed selectively in the ultimate stage by treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride or trifluoroacetic acid.In this way, monodisperse oligoesters of various chain lengths will be prepared.
