Summary on Grant Application Form
In the past five years the new subject of quantum computing has emerged. It both offers the potential of immense practical computing power and suggests deep links between quantum theory and information theory and computation. The UK has played a fundamental part in establishing the field and plays a leading role in current developments. The network includes several of the founders of the subject. It will develop and consolidate UK expertise, bringing together the leading groups from industrial, governmental and academic institutions. Research supported by the network will encompass the following areas: quantum algorithms and quantum algorithmic complexity; error-correcting codes and fault-tolerant computation; entanglement and non-locality; quantum teleportation and distributed computing; quantum communication and channel capacities; quantum cryptography; foundational aspects of quantum computing; experimental realizations of quantum computers.
