This proposal describes simple alternatives to existing planar chiral catalysts and ligands that are finding widespread application in asymmetric synthesis. Not only should the proposed systems be readily accessible, requiring no resolution or complex metal-ligand synthesis, but that are also inherently more versatile. This will be initially demonstrated with an imidazole structure obtained from (cheap) alpa-methylbenzlamine, and a cobalt metallocene complex that is accessible in oa one-pot reaction. Following coupling of these two components, this parent structure will be applied as a nucleophilic catalyst for the kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols, and its application as a catalyst in a range of other processes will also be examined. Optimisation of these catalysed reactions is anticipated to require the use of conformationally restricted variants of the initial parent structure. These ill be accessed using commercially available beta-amino alcohols to introduce the bifunctionality required for ring closure in the synthesis of bicyclic imidazoles. Further refinements will be made, if required, through variation of the starting amino alcohols, or though variation in the size of the aryl groups attached to the metallocene. Finally, these existing systems will be modified into novel ligands, with potential applications across all of transition metal based asymmetric catalysis.
