Summary on Grant Application Form
A time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer and associated laser equipment is being used to study bimolecular chemical reaction dynamics via measurement of product quantum-state resolved differential cross sections. The apparatus is fully operational and producing novel data, and support is requested for a project studentship and consumables expenditure to ensure the continued productivity of the experiment. Reactions to be studied include C1+HBr -> HC1(v', J') + Br, C1 +HI -> HC1(v',J') +I, and C1 + H2S -> HC1 (v', J') + SH, with further extension to reactions of C1 with large hydrocarbons such as cyclohexane. Centre-of-mass frame angular scatter of the HC1(v', J') products will be measured via laser and TOF methods for different vibrational and rotational states of the product. The experimental results will be compared with quasi-classical trajectory calculations to characterise the types of reactive trajectories leading to products formed in different quantum states and scattered in different directions.
