The proposal details the synthesis and co-ordination chemistry of a range of novel polytopic ligand systems. These ligands are designed to permit the controlled synthesis of multinuclear complexes. The ligand systems fall into two broad classes:1. Tritopic ligands which share a common aromatic (s-triazine) nucleus;2. Ligands which consist of macrocyclic donor sites linked via bridging hydroxyl groups.The transition metal co-ordination chemistry of the these ligands will be established via the synthesis of a wide range on homo- and heteronuclear complexes. Some ligands have also bee designed to systematically explore the interaction between d- and f- block elements. The reactivity of the new materials will be investigated by a range of test reactions. Specifically aqueous and biphasic oxidation catalysis of organic substrates (e.g. aromatic compounds) will be examined as a function of the electrode potentials of the complexes. Two specific case studies are also described. (1) The manganese chemistry and catalytic activity of a series of tetratopic ligands will be investigated in which the redox of chemistry of Mn4 clusters. (2) The synthesis of a polymeric ligand system and its complexes. The magnetic properties of this material will be examined as a function of metal type and oxidation state.
