Summary on Grant Application Form
The supercritical hydrogenation of organic compounds offers a high degree of control and selectivity. This proposal aims to develop a safe, small-scale apparatus for supercritical hydrogenation (continuous or batch) of liquids or solids without the need for bulky gas cylinders, by using the catalytic decomposition of HCOOH to generate H2 + CO2. Preliminary experiments are very promising. The objectives are (I) to optimise the generation of H2/CO2 at high pressures from HCCOH (ii) to evaluate homo- and heterogeneous hydrogenation and (iii) to explore the possibility of using the alternative decomposition pathway of HCOOH (to CO_H2O) for carbonylation reactions.
