Summary on Grant Application Form
The addition of nanosized particles to structural ceramics has been used to significantly improve their mechanical properties. Electroceramic materials are weak, with measured strengths of the order of 150Mpa and low toughness which often limits their use in some applications. The aim of this programme is to investigate the effect of additions of inert nanosized particles to common piezoelectric materials such as barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The microstructural changes and mechanical properties will be characterised for these materials. In addition the effect of these inert fine particles on the electrical properties will be examined and whether a reduction in electrical loss, ageing rate or fatigue is achieved. Improvements in electrical properties may be associated with changes in the piezoelectric microstructure or domain wall pinning.
