Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal outlines a three year programme of work which aims to use life cycle design innovation to enable designers to take a customer service viewpoint during the design process. The research is focused on how designers can identify the service a customer receives from a product and whether this will increase the designer's ability to design products with reduced environmental impact. It also seeks to answer the question What effect does the specification writing and negotiation process have on the companies joint ability to take a service design viewpoint? The action research method follows a well-proven approach, ie identifying a framework and models from a review of the literature and practitioner interviews, developing a trial methodology for service-oriented design, testing and methodology by direct application in companies a number of times and finally refining the methodology based on the experience. The industrial output will be an increased understanding of service design in the form of a service-oriented life cycle design framework and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses and general applicability of the service design methodology.
