Summary on Grant Application Form
The notion of using 'patterns' to document good design practice was first proposed by Alexander. It has recently been enthusiastically embraced by the software design community and a number of general patterns have been documented for reuse across a range of software systems. This project proposes the analgous notions of patterns of interaction which are patterns of co-operation and computer use that recur across a range of co-operative settings. Identifying these patterns will inform the process of social analysis of work and will help communicate the results of this analysis to system designers. We will work with a corpus of previous studies to identify a number of patterns of interaction and, from there, will define a template 'language' to define these patterns. We plan to document the patterns using this standard and evaluate their usefulness by widespread consultation with other researchers in this field and by applying them in a new workplace study. The results of the work will be documented in a publicly available 'patterns handbook' that will be available on the WWW.
