Summary on Grant Application Form
An efficient and manageable approach to river modelling is proposed in which a methodology will be established for the coupling local 3-D CFD modelling studies within larger scale 2-D CFD models to provide accurate solution in the most computationally efficient manner. The method will be capable of simulating the complex localised flows often found around man-made structures and at the same time the flow in the further river extents.Use will be made of the 2-D software, Sprint2D developed at Leeds, in order to integrate efficiently the shallow water equations embodied within the problem specific software. The development of a 3-D model will form the majority of the work with the proposed efficient 3-D surface tracking method for hydraulics flows, based on the VOF method requiring the use of state of the art numerical techniques. To embody these techniques efficiently the development will proceed in stages, beginning with the simulation of free surfaces on a 2-D vertical slice through a siphon structure on Cartesian grids which will then be extended to a more efficient and usable unstructured grid leading finally to the creation of a full 3-D VOF surface-tracking algorithm.
