The past decade has seen a rapid escalation in the use of organolanthanide complexes in the catalytic and non-catalytic transformations of unsaturated organic substrates. At the same time the transformation of low co-ordination phosphorus compounds (e.g. phosphaalkenes, RP=CR2, and phosphaalkynes, P=CR) by transition and main group metal complexes has blossomed. Surprisingly, however, the interaction of organolanthanide (III) complexes with low co-ordination phosphorus compounds has never been examined. We seek to bridge this gap with a full extension of a preliminary study in our laboratories in which such interactions have yielded the first examples of lanthanide based metallophosphaalkenes. Once prepared the organic and co-ordination chemistry of metallophosphaalkenes will be systematically explored. In addition the catalytic oligomerisation and polymerisation of both phosphaalkenes and phosphaalkynes by organolanthanide (III) complexes will be attempted. We believe this will provide an array of novel organophosphorus oligomers, polymers, cages and heterocycles that will be exploitable by synthetic organic, heterocyclic and organometallic chemists; in addition to chemical industries based on organometallic catalysts. It is clear this project will provide valuable experience to the requested PGRS in a field which is currently generating considerable interest in chemists and industrialists alike.
