This proposal is on the topic of real-time (and near real-time) capture and conversion of 2D image data into 3D computer graphics model. The research question we are addressing is to determine if it is possible to achieve real-time, or at least near real-time, 3D imaging using only commercially available PC technology and state-of-the-art compiler technology.Firstly, we propose to exploit emergent processor and computer architectural features and improvements, such as MMX, large memory spaces and multiprocessing. Secondly, we propose to investigate algorithmic changes that maximise the matching process efficiency. We shall adopt the idea of active vision, including use of foveated algorithms, in the context of exploiting real-time operation to allow surface capture to be undertaken in an adaptive manner to minimise the matching effort expended. Thirdly, we propose to speed the matching process by combining the advantages of fundamentally different matching approaches. For example, moving image coding techniques afford very high speed matching that might be combined with the current area-correlation methods to recover high accuracy as well.We propose to implement demonstration systems as outlined in the objectives section to benchmark the developed algorithms in a context relating to the needs of our industrial collaborators.
