The healthcare question to be addressed by this project is whether mobile videotelemetry might be used to aid paramedics in the diagnosis, resuscitation and triage of patients. The engineering challenge is to develop technology to fulfil this role. The specific scenario is one that links ambulance paramedics to a base Accident and Emergency department by a digital wireless link providing video, voice and data for communication between paramedics and postgraduate emergency doctors in hospital. In this way medical input to the immediate management of an emergency would be possible.The system is a mobile emergency videotelemetry unit in which a ruggedized PC is linked to a control centre by a digital cellular radio network, specifically the Orange GSM network. The system will be used in a randomised clinical trial by motorcycle paramedics of the Avon Ambulance service, who will set up a digital video camera to give an overview of an incident, and carry a digital still camera. The cameras send pictures to the mobile PC via a short range wireless local area network, which relays multiplexed real time video and slow scan high resolution images to clinicians in the Emergency Department at Frenchay Hospital, who are also in voice contact.
