Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research programme will be carried out in collaboration with Woods Air Movement Limited who will contribute to the fan blading design and in the acoustic measurements. Woods Air Movement have defined improvements to the aerodynamics as the way to reduce fan noise and have selected to work with Cranfield after a fruitful collaboration over several years. To achieve the stated objectives a detailed description of the flow is essential for the understanding and identification of any aerodynamic deficiencies which may result in extra noise. For this reason experimental and computational studies are proposed. The tasks involve a study of a datum fan designed using conventional quasi-three-dimensional techniques. The computational analysis available from TASC flow will be enhanced by providing a broadband and tonal noise prediction capability. The analysis of flow conditions and noise generation within the datum design will be used to design revised blading which will be tested. Results of this revised test will be compared with design predictions.
