The research will develop and demonstrate new decision support tools to improve the safety and economic performance of complex civil engineering infrastructures, including dams, flood and coast defences and engineered and natural slopes. These economically important and safety-critical infrastructures are characterised by complex, site-specific failure mechanisms, scarce monitoring information and, currently, a major element of expert judgement in condition assessments and asset management decisions. The research will build on recent work at Bristol on process and uncertainty modelling, hazard and vulnerability assessment, full scale monitoring and decision support. It will bring together experts from seven organisations with responsibility for condition monitoring and asset management. The project will begin with analysis of generic problems, sources of uncertainty and current best practices. Process modelling techniques will be used to structure the condition monitoring and asset management process and provide a basis for decision support. Emerging methods for handling uncertainty, including 2D Monte Carlo simulation, Bayesian methods, fuzzy methods and Interval Probability Theory, will be tested and applied. New, consistent and rigorous approaches to characterising the condition of complex infrastructures, which merge information f different pedigree from a variety of sources, will be developed and integrated in new decision support tools.
