Summary on Grant Application Form
While palladium complexes are unrivalled in the number and types of reactions they catalyse, in many cases the factors controlling catalyst selectivity, stability and activity are often finely balanced. For example, the palladium mediated coupling of propene, carbon monoxide and alcohol to generate proprionate derivatives is of immense commercial importance. However, a relatively minor change in the nature of the supporting diphosphine ligand results in a dramatic change in product selectivity to give high molecular weight perfectly alternating alkene-carbon monoxide co-polymer, a useful wear-resistant thermoplastic material. The primary aim of this project is to synthesise a range of bidentate phosphines with varying steric and electronic properties and test the alkoxycarbonylation activity of cationic palladium systems containing these new ligands. It is intended that phosphine synthesis and catalyst testing will be intimately linked in an iterative process, such that the results of catalyst testing will be fed back into phosphine design. The fundamental platinum group co-ordination chemistry of these ligands will also be developed, with an aim to preparing well-defined molecular catalysts for olefin alkoxycarbonylation . Finally, the synthetic methods used to prepare the bidentate phosphines will also be applied to the preparation of multidentate and macrocyclic phosphines.
