Summary on Grant Application Form
Recently developed techniques to estimate bearing forces will be compared with monitored rotor and bearing vibration levels. By comparing these signals, the effective stiffness of a set of oil journal bearings is established, and from this the alignment of the complete machine can be determined under running conditions. The parameters will be used to form a model of the machine and hence the position of the rotor with respect to casing, as well as the rotor stress profile, can be established. Since misalignment is on of the two major difficulties in running large machines, the proposed techniques offer significant benefits.
