Summary on Grant Application Form
This project seeks to establish the use of a novel class of hybrid organic-inorganic nanostructured materials for analysis detection. In particular we will investigate the interaction of various analytes with different w-functionalised self-assembled monolayers, used to stabilise the metallic nanoparticles. These interactions will be monitored by spectroscopic ellipsometry (to investigate the mechanism underlying the changes in conductivity) and will be correlated with the observed conductivity changes. In addition we shall perform a full electronic and physical characterisation of the surfactant stabilised nanoparticles used in this study. We expect these sensors to exhibit a high degree of sensitivity due to the exponential dependence of the tunnelling term, in the conductivity, on the core-core separation. The ability to tailor the w-functional group leads to control over the particle-analyte interaction strength and hence should provide enhanced selectivity.
