Image processing and analysis techniques will be developed to address current limitations in the application of magnetic resonance imaging to breast cancer screening, diagnosis and management. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to provide a very sensitive means of identifying breast cancer. Current challenges are image registration during and between visits, identifying significant features in large volumes of four dimensional data, assessing the diagnostic impact of different features, and using the technique as a screening tool in high risk groups, particularly those at generic risk of breast cancer. A further opportunity is the potential to develop methods of detecting pre-clinical change enabling earlier detection. Based on initial experience in registration, feature extraction and dynamic processing, the programme will develop approaches and evaluate these on large datasets being acquired for the MRC supported UK MR breast cancer screening trial, together with series of symptomatic patients at the Royal Marsden and Guys. The potential to automate and distribute these approaches, either by date transfer to a processing site, or by dissemination of the software, will be investigated.
