The purpose of this programme is to develop a novel scanning microscope (SEPM) in which the key element is an array of ultra high input impedance electric potential sensors. As we have already shown, a single sensor SEPM is capable of imaging large scale integrating circuits at spatial scales of around 1 micron. However, the time constraints of scanning with a single sensor mean that this prototype instrument is not realistically useable as a research tool. Our intention is to develop sensor arrays so that we can reduce imaging time, at 0.5 micron resolution, by over an order of magnitude. This will open up the fully engineered instrument to research topics of great importance to the semiconductor fabrication industry, where there is a clear requirement for imaging the electrical properties of VLSI chips non-invasively. We also intend to apply this new instrumentation technology to a range of basic problems spanning the fields of physics, biology and materials science. Specifically, we will focus on:1. Non linear electrodynamics in coupled arrays of wither Schmitt triggers or phase locked loops:2. Electrical activity in neural networks and3. Probing the structure of advanced composite materials, particularly those displaying a fractal morphology.
