A unique experimental system will be designed and constructed to study superradiance and the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in a prepared plasma. To enable these studies a flexible format, high power optical pulse amplifier and an optical parametric amplifier will be designed. This will provide two independently tuneable ultra-short optical pulses and a flexible-format, amplitude-modulated pulse. In addition, a source of quasi-unipolar (half-cycle), tuneable and narrow band terahertz pulses will be constructed. The interaction region for these studies will be an underdense plasma created by an electrical discharge in a gas. To produce tuneable high power terahertz radiation from the plasma, a short period undulator producing a periodically magnetised plasma, will be constructed. The equipment designed will be used to investigate short optical and terahertz pulse propagation, amplification, generation, scattering, electromagnetically induced transparency and superradiance in plasmas.
