The use of coherency strain as a means of producing high-strength high-temperature materials is an area, which is attracting increasing interest. One problem with this is that the idea relies on the use of coherently strained multilayers, but these multilayer structures will normally undergo diffusion at high temperatures which destroys the very structure which is giving them their exciting properties. The aim of this proposal is to address the problem of interdiffusion by using multilayers which have a miscibility gap between their constituent alloys. For this work we will be using a 'model' semiconductor system as a test-bed for our ideas, as well as developing techniques which could be applied to more structurally useful materials.
