Ongoing work at Leeds has established that nano-dispersed nickel on amorphous silica in the presence of hydrogen is highly efficient in the selective removal of chlorine from concentrated gaseous streams of polychlorinated phenols. Using our database of gas phase catalytic activities/selectivities, the most effective nickel catalysts will be screened for liquid phase hydrodechlorinations and having defined the optimum conditions, a limited number of supported Pt, Pd, Rh and Ru systems shall be examined. The nature of reactant/product(s) interactions with the catalyst will be probed using spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques and the productive catalyst lifetime will be established. Catalyst characterisation, before and after catalysis, will involve build structural studies (X-ray diffraction), high resolution TEM, analytical TEM including EDX and EELS and surface studies using X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectroscopies. Having optimised catalyst efficiency in the dechlorination of model reactants, a series of industrial chlorinated waste samples (provided by the industrial collaborator) will be treated with a view to efficiently regenerating reusable material.
