The current proposal aims to enhance our understanding of the fundamental aspects of selective heterogeneous catalytic oxidation. Selective oxidation provides a simple and effective route for the transformation of alkanes to more commercially valuable products and forms the basis of promising new routes for the direct conversation of ethane to acetic acid and methane to methanol and formaldehyde. Two catalysts systems will be studied and these are based on molybdenum and vanadium oxide. Previously both have demonstrated promising activity for selective methane oxidation. The reactivity of these catalysts will be probed further by investigating a series of alkanes, with particular reference to catalytic regio selectivity. In addition, a comprehensive study relating to the nature of the oxidant will be made by comparing molecular oxygen with nitrous oxide and ozone. Extensive use of in situ laser Raman spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques will be used to study the chemistry and structure of catalysts under operating conditions, providing an examination of the active systems. Subsequently this approach will be developed further by a combination of in situ characterisation and non steady state/isotope studies to probe the reaction mechanisms and aid the scientific design of superior oxidation catalysts.
