Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to investigate a recently discovered method for effecting an intramolecular variant of the Baylis-Hillman reaction. As part of this project we will investigate the reaction to discover methods for the improvement of yield and reaction rate and the general effects of catalyst and conditions and thus gain insight in the mechanism and scope of the process. Efforts will be made to develop an asymmetric version of the reaction and the effects of both internal and external stereocontrol of the reaction will be investigated. Applications of this reaction in the synthesis of carbocyclic and heterocyclic molecules will be investigated, together with approaches to the synthesis of natural products.
