Summary on Grant Application Form
Investigators from UMIST, the University of Surrey, Loughborough University and Imperial College are to embark on a consortium programme to investigate the potential of LES for computing complex engineering flows around aerofoils, blades and combustor guide-vanes. The programme will proceed as a linked set of 4 projects funded by a variety of sponsors. Although the areas of application differ among the projects, all share important common objectives and activities. Common elements include (i) separation from curved surfaces; (ii) the use of body-fitted multi-block FV meshes of relatively low quality; (iii) the fundamental importance of modelling near-wall processes in high-Reflows; (iii) the importance of sub-grid-scale modelling applied in conjunction with skewed and high-aspect-ratio grids; (iv) the search for optimum pressure solvers representing mass conservation; and (v) the search for optimum parallel implementations on HPC97. These issues are to be investigated in a collaborative manner, with information and improved methodologies shared continuously among the partners. The consortium's efforts are to be assisted by Daresbury Laboratory's HPCI Centre.
