Summary on Grant Application Form
Feasibility experiments have demonstrated the practicability of performing a new type of tomography, energy-dispersive diffraction tomograph; such a technique is quite different to the various spectroscopic tomographies that already exist. Energy-dispersive diffraction tomography requires a synchrotron radiation white X-ray source and is capable of producing structure-composition profiles with resolutions approaching 1 micron. Such a facility would be ideal for studying a whole range of problems in materials and engineering science. In this project a complete system would be designed and purpose-built, incorporating facilities for intelligent scanning, partial on-line processeing, and various kinds of time-resolved in-situ application using sample environmental enclosures. The system would be designed, built and commissioned within the first year, and during the remaining 2 years would be applied to 6 multi-disciplinary prototype projects which are detailed in the Case for Support. Keywords describing areas ol proposalBuilding, chemical Engineering, Ceramics, Civil Engineering, Catalysis, Devices, Energy, Materials, Processing, Synchrotron Radiation, Synthesis
