Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work examining the fluctuations of coherent polarised light have revealed that correlations of components of the Stokes vector contain information that pertains to the shape the particles causing the scattering. An instrument will be constructed that automatically varies the input and scattered polarisation state with a view to constructing correlations between two components of the Stokes vector and then examining their dependence as a function of scattering angle. The data will be stored using a two-channel photon-counting data storage and analysis system. Unlike any currently available system such as commericially available correlators, this system will provide maximum flexibility in the statistical measures to be made by simply recording the raw photon-count data for subsequent computer analysis. The instrument will be used to thoroughly investigate various possible experimental arrangements and data processing techniques to assess the effectiveness of polarised Gaussian scattering for obtaining particle shape parameters.
